21c hotel group, chef plan pizza restaurant: Garage Bar set for E. Market St. in July

The owners of 21c Museum Hotel and Michael Paley, the chef at Proof on Main at the boutique hotel, will open a restaurant featuring wood-oven pizza and Southern menu specialties to be called the Garage Bar at 700 E. Market St.

The restaurant is expected to open in July in a building that was long a service station and auto-repair shop, on the southeast corner of Market and Clay streets. Property records dating to 1938 show that it was once used as a saloon. The renovation, which is well under way, will retain the building's character as a garage.

Stephanie Greene, a spokeswoman for 21c Museum Hotel and for Proof on Main, said Paley will be the chef at the new restaurant and will continue to oversee the kitchen at Proof on Main. The Garage Bar menu will feature craft beer brewed off-site, Greene said.

The Third Global Hotel Industry Cultural Forum and Gold Champion Award Presentation Ceremony took place in Shenzhen on 15 May 2011. At the ceremony, Traders Upper East Hotel was named the Best Business Hotel in China. This is the second hotel award the hotel has won after being cited "Ten Best Newly Opened Hotels in China" last year since its opening in 2009.

The forum was hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the General Administration of Press and Publications of the People’s Republic of China. Nearly 500 attendees from the China National Tourism Administration, hotel industry associations at national and provincial levels, high-grade hotels, hotel suppliers and the media were present at the forum. Some might argue that Birmingham's new capsule hotel doesn't really offer penthouse luxury, but few could quibble with its rock-bottom prices

Penthouse proposition, pavement price, says the press blurb for the 73-room Bloc Hotel Birmingham. The concept is based on Japanese capsule hotels, but the construction technique, by a company called Boxbuild, is unusual. Boxbuild manufactured the rooms off-site then stacked them in situ so the hotel exterior could be wrapped round them.

Fundamental to the idea is eliminating unnecessary space (so that rooms can be more densely packed into the site). Research showing that hotel guests rarely unpack an overnight bag (that puts me in a minority, then) has resulted in "space hungry" wardrobes being replaced by something called an "integrated bag storage area".

HEI Fund Acquires Arlington VA Sheraton

HEI Hotels & Resorts (HEI) today announced that the company has purchased the fee simple interest in the 417-room Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel, Virginia.  HEI acquired the ownership interest for an undisclosed amount from National Hospitality Corporation headquartered in Washington DC.

HEI has taken over management of the hotel as part of the transaction and will continue to operate the hotel as a Sheraton. The property is the 39th hotel in the company’s portfolio and HEI’s seventh hotel under Starwood’s Sheraton brand. 

“This is the second acquisition of our $515-million HEI Hospitality Fund III, L.P. in the past 30 days and our third acquisition this year” said Steve Mendell, president acquisitions and development. “The hotel acquisition market has clearly thawed in the past six months and HEI is well positioned to be a major player in the current transaction climate.”

Pebblebrook Hotel Trust Acquires the Viceroy Miami

Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) today announced that it has acquired the Viceroy Miami for $36.5 million. The 148-room, luxury, full-service hotel is located in downtown Miami, Florida, in the ICON Brickell complex. The property will continue to be managed by Viceroy Hotel Group ("Viceroy").

Best Western Northgate Inn Pampa recently launched a full-featured independent website. The hotel in Pampa, Texas is owned and operated by Baywood Hotels (Baywood), an award-winning hotel management company based in Maryland.

Baywood contracted hotel Internet marketing agency Worldwide Revenue Solutions (WRS) for web design, web optimization and marketing. The Best Western Northgate Inn is the latest in a growing portfolio of Baywood hotels optimized by WRS.

Al Diar Siji Hotel invests in refurbishments

In its continuing efforts to provide nothing less than high quality products and services to guests, the five-star Al Diar Siji Hotel is investing heavily in refurbishments. The first phase of the refurbishment which covered the ballroom and public area including the lobby lounge has already been completed.

Carpets in the Masafi Ballroom which is one of the largest function rooms in the East Coast had been changed, together with the Masafi Foyer. Meetings & conferences facilities have also been upgraded and two new meetings rooms have been added.

The lobby lounge and reception area now sport a new look with the installation of new carpets and upgrading of furniture.

Hawaii hotels make Tennis Resorts Online’s top 100 list

Three Hawaii hotels are ranked on Tennis Resorts Online’s list of the “Top 100 Tennis Resorts and Camps for 2011.”

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island ranked seventh among the 75 resorts on the list. It also earned top rankings in three individual categories: second for “most romantic,” third for “best game matching” and third for “best setting.”

Ranking between 26th and 50th was the Kapalua Resort on Maui, and ranking between 51st and 75th was The Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island. The specific rankings for both were not available.

The rankings included 75 resorts and 25 camps.
