Hilton’s UAE expansion focuses on Ras Al Khaimah

Thursday, July 7th, 2011
Al Hamra Fort Hotel and Beach Resort

Hilton is rapidly adding more hotels in the UAE, but not in the widely-known cities of Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Instead, the hotel company is focusing its expansion on the relatively low-key northern emirate of Ras al Khaimah, which aims to attract visitors looking for a quieter and less costly alternative to its glitzier neighbours in the country.

With a population of about 300,000, Ras al Khaimah is a relatively sleepy destination compared to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but it offers rugged natural beauty and more of a local flavour as a higher percentage of Emiratis live in the emirate.

RAK is keen to boost its tourism revenue and has embarked on a plan to invest $100m in hotels and other infrastructure projects over the next four years with the aim of quadrupling its tourism footfall.

Tapping a growing market

With RAK raising its tourism profile, Hilton is one of … Read the rest

Hotel Ambos Mundos

To mark the 50th anniversary of Ernest Hemingway's death, Hotel Ambos Mundos is offering a tour of a room where the American writer spent the first months of his 21 years in Cuba, says a report by AFP.

"In America, Hemingway is known through his books, through libraries and museums, but in Cuba there is an oral tradition about his life. He belongs to the Cuban scene. To understand him, you have to come to Havana," Jenny Phillips, the granddaughter of Hemingway's editor, tells the news agency.

The room features the writer's glasses and drawing pencil. A fisherman's vest and bullfighter's jacket hang in the dresser. A typewriter sits in the center of the room, the report says.

A daiquiri at the Floridita, a mojito at the Bodeguita del Medio and an afternoon at Finca Vigia are also recommended for Hemingway fans arriving in Cuba, the report says.

In addition, The Big Bopper acts as the compere for the evening, guiding the audience on a journey into the rock'n'roll era.
