Luxury Hotel Offers Rooms to Japan Disaster Victims

Acts of kindness prevail throughout Japan from such names as historic Tokyo luxury hotel Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka Tokyo.

Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka Tokyo was once one of the finest luxury hotels in Tokyo, housing politicians and celebrities from around the world. After over half a century in the business, Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka was set to close its doors for good this March, but instead it found a different calling. The luxury hotel’s doors have opened once again to shelter victims of the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters that have been left homeless.

According to Economic Times, the 40-story luxury hotel Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka will become the temporary home for up to 360 guests in need. This luxury hotel once charged as much as ¥150,000 ($1,750 USD) a night, but these guests will of course not be charged – though three meals a day are offered at a small price … Read the rest

Disaster claims first Tokyo hotel closing

In the days since the 9.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked northern Japan, the country has received no mercy from the elements. A subsequent tsunami rinsed coastal areas of structures and human life and now the area is at risk of radiation from nuclear reactor meltdowns.

The earthquake’s magnitude was revised upward 14 March by the United States Geological Survey.

Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo

The hotel management released the following statement 21 March: “Following the natural disasters in Japan on 11 March and the resulting logistical difficulties and hazards, Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo will not be accepting any new guests until further notice.
