Fort Lauderdale beach hotels want to serve visitors on the sand

Thursday, January 24th, 2013
The Ritz Carlton Fort Lauderdale

City tourists should be able to get food and drink delivered on the beach, say hotel and restaurant managers who would sell it to them.

Beach hoteliers told commissioners Tuesday that the city's beachfront won't be a truly world-class destination unless their patrons can get beach service — with or without alcohol on the menu.

"European travelers expect to be served on the beach," said Jim Oliver, general manager of the The Ritz Carlton Fort Lauderdale.

Commissioners appeared supportive of allowing the additional beach service, separating it out from a portion of the proposal that would permit the businesses to serve alcohol on the beach and allow other beach-goers to bring their own.

"That to me is a minor piece of the pie here," Mayor Jack Seiler said of the alcohol provision. "If we can enhance the experience for our tourists, that's what I want to look at."

Royal Palm to become a James hotel

The James Royal Palm

Renovations at the storied The James Royal Palm in Miami Beach are expected to be complete by late next year.

Under new ownership, The James Royal Palm is about to undergo major renovations — and a name change.

Private equity firm KSL Capital Partners bought the South Beach hotel for $130 million from Sunstone Hotel Investors in a deal that closed last week. The hotel will become part of The James brand, which already includes locations in Chicago and New York.

Sunstone didn’t hold on to the 409-room property for long: the California-based lodging real estate investment trust bought the Royal Palm through a foreclosure auction in August at a cost it said amounted to $117 million.

Next up: $42 million in renovations to guest rooms, public spaces and outdoor areas. When finished, the hotel at 1545 Collins Ave. will have 179 guest rooms, 211 studios and suites and a new spa … Read the rest
