Another Milestone for Hawai’i’s Fishes

Thursday, June 16th, 2011
Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

To some, it may have been an insignificant change—one that may have even gone largely unnoticed. Last month, The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui freed the inhabitants—sickly yellow tang—of the 800-gallon saltwater aquarium fish tank that sits outside of Nick’s Fishmarket. Today, the tank is filled with freshwater—along with a new gaggle of freshwater-friendly (and arguably healthier-looking) denizens.

On the afternoon of Friday, June 10, dozens of marine and reef advocates, visitor industry leaders and representatives from the County of Maui arrived at the Wailea hotel to recognize another milestone for Hawai‘i’s fishes. Maui’s Snorkel Bob Foundation and its president and founder, Robert Wintner, sponsored the event in order “to celebrate another giant step forward in the South Maui reef community.”

The Snorkel Bob Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was spearheaded by Wintner and other ocean enthusiasts to focus on reef recovery, recognizing the global impacts of any problems on any reef … Read the rest

Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

Castle Resorts & Hotels is proud to announce Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has received yet another accolade, the Taste of Hilo People's Choice Award, this time from the Hilo Huli.

The fundraising event, held on Moku Ola, or Coconut, Island on Sunday, May 1, 2011, is held each year by the Rotary Club of South Hilo to support doctors' residency programs on Hawaii's Big Island. The hotel's entry was prepared by the property's resident Certified Executive Chef, Piet Wigmans. Wigmans prepared his "Chef's Big Island Fresh Fish Entree" consisting of sauteed walu on a bed of creamed roasted corn chowder with Waimea beefsteak tomatoes and sauteed hamakua mushrooms.

"We are extremely proud of Chef Wigmans and our staff at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, both for their creativity and the standard of excellence they work to uphold for every meal and every guest," said Alan Mattson, President and Chief Operating Officer of … Read the rest

Waikiki hotel occupancy eases

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Hotels on Oahu, including those in the fabled Waikiki tourist district, have seen occupancy fall five percentage points in one week on lower Japan arrivals.

For the seven days to last Sunday, Oahu occupancy was 79%, down from 84% the week before and one point lower than the same time last year, Hospitality Advisors LLC reported Friday. Average room rates were 8% higher than last year.

Kauai hotels were 59% full, Big Island 62% full, and Maui County 83% full, all higher than last year, reflecting the fact that Japanese visitor traffic is a small component on neighbor islands while U.S. mainland visitor traffic is up 15% to Maui and up 22% to the Big Island, compared to last year.

For the same period, U.S. hotel occupancy was 65%, Smith Travel Research LLC reported.… Read the rest
