Hotels improve customer service process using mobile apps

Thursday, June 30th, 2011
Mondrian Soho

A rising number of hotels are leveraging advances in mobile technology to implement process improvement in customer service, according to USA Today.

Hotels such as Mondrian Soho are working with third-party software developers to produce industry-specific applications that allow guests to order food, look up information about hotel amenities and local attractions, schedule wake-up calls, send messages to other guests, arrange a car service and more.

The initiative creates time for front desk staff who would have previously been occupied answering calls and transferring requests to appropriate departments. Additionally, it removes a step in the customer service process by routing guests' requests straight to their intended destinations. For example, room service orders are sent directly to kitchen staff.

"For a lot of hotels, it's an extension of the kiosk mentality," travel technology analyst Michael Planey told the news source. "The app economy is about giving people control of their … Read the rest

Hotels offer services through tablet PCs

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Mondrian Soho

For a night of clubbing in Manhattan on a recent weekend, Seunghee Thomson turned to the iPad in her room at the Mondrian Soho to ask the hotel's concierge for a recommendation.

The concierge desk, which received her iPad message, soon called with a name and directions. "While I was waiting, I was thinking maybe I should call back to see if they got my message, but they called me back right away," says the fashion stylist from McLean, Va. "It's the first time I've had that experience in a hotel."

Mondrian Soho is one of several hotels — and airlines, too — that are distributing iPads and similar devices to customers in an effort to tap the buzz surrounding tablet computers. The effort is the latest by the travel industry to digitize a range of services that once required picking up the phone.

Using third-party software developers, … Read the rest

Hotel review: Yotel, New York

Saturday, June 11th, 2011
YOTEL New York at Times Square West

It's a seriously sweltering New York afternoon as I limp gratefully off the street into the slick, glass-fronted YOTEL New York at Times Square West. In stark, cool contrast to the hectic, less-than-lovely corner of 10th Avenue and 42nd Street outside, the airy lobby feels like the Starship Enterprise. To my left, a bank of airport-style touch-screen check-in machines; to my right, the Yobot, 18m of hydraulic arm guarding a giant wall of left-luggage lockers.

The baggage beast is at rest, but the smartly attired staff, six of them in Star Trek-issue grey and purple uniforms, bid me a cheery welcome, and Julio, "my" doorman, ushers me to the self-service screens. Too many unexpected items in the bagging areas at Sainsbury's have made me suspicious of unmanned automation, but Julio is on hand to help, and the machine digests my details and spits out a room key.

I must admit to having had reservations … Read the rest

Mystery Buyer To Buy Hotel Chelsea, Report Says

Thursday, April 7th, 2011
Chelsea Hotel

A deal to sell the Chelsea Hotel for more than $80 million was close to being finalized Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

For now, however, the identity of the real buyer remains a mystery, with both sides staying mum on the deal's particulars.

"We are close to a deal and we hope to have more information soon," said Loren Riegelhaupt, a spokesman for Chelsea Hotel.

David Edelstein, the head of the Tristar Capital firm, has been the lead contender in the bidding war for the 129-year-old hotel, which was put up for sale in October.

Names, including celebrity hoteliers Andre Balazcs and Ian Schrager, were previously rumored to be interested in buying the property. David Bard, whose family owned and operated the hotel for years, made a bid, as did Richard Born, a principal with BD Hotels which once operated the hotel, the Journal reported.
